Academic thoughts on immigration – a European kaleidoscope

LITHUANIA

In 2023, Lithuania had a population of 2.85 million people.

Due to emigration and a low fertility rate – 1.58 children per woman in 2013, for example – the figure was 100,000 people higher ten years earlier. Compared to 1990, Lithuania has even lost 836,000 inhabitants.

With a current fertility rate of 1.2, the population is expected to fall by a further seven per cent to 2.64 million by 2033, although more people have moved in than out in recent years. This trend increased significantly in 2022.

Almost 180,000 foreigners immigrated, a third of them with temporary protection status. The proportion of third-country nationals (i.e. non-EU citizens) rose to 3.4 per cent of the population as at 1 January 2023 (EU: 6.1%).
